North Norfolk Coastal Path – Weybourne to Wells-next-the-Sea (15.5 miles)

First proper day of walking, once again a beautiful day with no prospect of rain or strong winds. The first couple of miles were the hardest of the entire walk being on pebbles/shingle into which your foot sunk on every step.
However, once passed, great walking between flats on the landward side and ridged beach on the seaward side. Lots of birds, although nothing like as many as would be found in the winter. Saw our first Avocets of the walk (a nesting pair).
One of the disadvantages with any coastal walk is that you have to keep making detours inland to circumnavigate river esturies as at Cley-next-the-Sea where you walk inland 1.25 miles only to cross a bridge and walk back out the same distance! However it did give the chance to see Cley (which was very nice) and to stop there for a cup of tea and ice cream (which was even nicer). It also gave us the chance to watch and listen to a sedge warbler singing it’s head off about 4 foot away from where we were standing! It entertained us for about 5 minutes and I think would have carried on all day, but we needed to press on.
Arrived in Wells to make yet another interesting discovery – Wells-next-the-sea is not next to the sea – apparently it used to be but is now about 1 mile inland from the mean high water line.
To be honest was disappointed in Wells – as so often when so many people have spoken highly about somewhere you’ve not seen I guess you have high expectations which are often not met. Still it did have one great thing – a CoastHopper bus stop (in fact 2). So a ride back to Weybourne to collect the car from the side street where we had parked it that morning.
